Malay or Islam comes first?

admin June 16th, 2007

If you guys realize there are some stuff in Malay culture that actually contradict Islamic teachings. Actually, this is just small matter but it has been a dilemma for some people - which one to follow? One obvious example is “tepung tawar” and “pelamin” during Malays wedding. In my opinion, we should follow Islam’s teachings for our lifestyle. Some older people might not accept this since almost everyone has “pelamin” and “tepung tawar” for their wedding day. So, you have to be brave to hold up your decision. As for me, I will not have any of those during my future wedding day. No matter what anyone says. *wink*wink*

Anyway, that is my approach if we define “comes first” as in lifestyle practice. What if I ask you “Who would you help? Malays or Muslims?” , in this case, I choose “Justice”. We have to help everyone that is in need. Not just our race or religion.

And there is one killer question someone asked me and my friends. If there were 2 political parties - 1 support Malays and the other one support Muslims. Which will you choose? Wawawawawawawa… dunno. both?

erm… haha.. controversial post. it reminds me to perjumpaan umno last year. the speaker said he put islam in the third place, after malay and malaysia (if i’m not mistaken). I know he was trying to be patriotic, or nationalistic but i was shocked for a vip to say something cursory like that.

if i were to choose between malay and islam, without any doubt i will choose islam. Because it’s the only thing that could help me in hereafter. Call me kolot or conservative, but if you were to choose between 80-year of life compared to eternity, the choice is obvious.

fortunately for us, malay and islam have a long history together. Almost all things in malay culture are compliant with syarak. so there is no need to choose except in small number of matters. For those matter, i’ll try my best to choose islam.

yup..agree with irwan. cheers bro.hoho.politicians are more to their agenda n mostly just boost n show off.well im sure nisa refered to UMNO n PAS. like for UMNO most of their leaders are corrupted n etc. im sure most of u know money politics.like PAS also got some inner probs.like.some leaders are ok.some not.anyway like if in a condition of only to choose only one between umno and pas.kinda have to choose pas.even though people say its bit kolot

well, i didn’t really specify the two political parties as between umno and pas. to tell u the truth, i don’t really like both of them. each one condemning the other. but i guess, that is the life of politics. when i was asked that question, the first thing that popped out of my mind is actually, the world. a political party that represents Malay as a whole and a political party that represents Muslims as a whole (include Arabs, Chinese, Indians, every Muslims in the whole world). Oh well, maybe I misunderstood the question. Lolololo.

Anyway, talking about this political party thing, i remember my friend pointed out that PAS is more towards becoming a “pembangkang” instead of a government. They don’t really have a backup government to really rule Malaysia. Totally different from Democratic and Republican parties which have their own backup government. Don’t have to start from scratch. What do u think?

about this particular post,we all have become to agree that culture and religion are what defined us,nowadays.Hover, unlike Religion, particularly Islam which hasn’t changed (Al-Quran n Sunnah) since it first brought to this world by our prophet. However, unlike Culture,it is continuously changing as it is dependent on what the situations,or surroundings perceive it. Whoever comes first,or what is Malay or Muslim dilemma depends on your niat. If u a lazy, then it is u who needs to be blamed on n not because of u as a Malay or a Muslim or both. That’s just a lame excuse to protect urself,to not pushing urself forward and realizing ur own mistake. So,all comes to an end is ur niat.If ur niat is good,if u lead ur life in good or istiqamah way,n when u acknowledge ur own fault,it doesn’t matter what dilemma is. What u did u get back, n this is all depends on our Niat. :)

  6. kaklongon 17 Jun 2007 at 8:54 pm

that makes me think a little. so, we should be the one that inspire the culture, no the culture inspiring us. is it?

huuhu..very interesting topic…ermm…i think i agree with irwan. I will choose Islam,in fact, i die for it if i hv to. well, that is also the main reason why i am in the army..(besides being an engineer in the making)..my heartless trainer once asked me, why d u join the army, instead of just be an engineer, why do you pick both? i then replied, it’s because of my country..a die for it..(waa..patriotik tahap dewa seh)..then he yelled at me with a ‘no’..u already lost your purpose of life…your niah is absolutely wrong..while asking me to do 50push-ups (ade je poin nak dera aku)..he explained, “u r being a soldier not bcoz of ur country, but Islam. But in order to protect Islam, you hav to protect your nation. In order to protect the nation, u protect the country. How can u possibly imagine Islam will be strong without a nation, a country. That’s why, if you choose to protect Islam, U’ll protect all 3 of it.”..baguih jgak org tue ni, igtkan tau sepak2 trajang org je..huhu..his speech inspired me..
N kaklong, regarding dat ‘pelamin’ n ‘tpung tawar’ thing, u dont worry about that..the mindset of our people here in mesia are gradually changing, to accept the idea of not having those during walimatulurus..alhamdulillah,its becoming a norm in our society n i will finally agree that people are now ‘well-educated’…huhuh=)

dah 2 weeks baru nak bg comments..sowi.

Islam atau melayu; which comes first? not a big deal for me.I am a muslim, I am a malay. I am a malay, I am a muslim. :)

Maybe sbb terlampau ramai orang yg telah melakukan suatu2 perkara yg memburukkan nama Islam dan juga Melayu. and it has been human’s nature to associate the bad things (and also the good things) with the general people(in this case, the race & the religion) due to lack of information and understanding of the culture itself. It’s true that we should see the mistakes as personal mistake, not as a culture/race identity. However, due to lack informational and educational (or just pure laziness to do research), it is easier to observe and conclude about a race/religion. That is what happens nowadays. Even people always say to use malaysian students “jaga tingkah laku, anda duta kecil malaysia” coz people will see what we are doing and they will conclude that all Malaysians are like us. If we’re good, they’ll think all Malaysians are good - if we’re not, they’ll think Malaysians are terrorists or maybe barbarians. Huhu.

Thats rite!!betul abom kata..!!!SAFETY COMES FIRST..!!!not many malay realized that they’r muslim..but we cant say like that cos nowaday,if we’r looking around us, we c that malay is actually not necessarily muslim cos kalu kita tgk skg nie pun kes murtad mmg banyak!!looked back 2 lina joy’s case…seorg melayu yg nak sgt dirinye distiharkan sebagai “KRISTIAN”…So,for me im not so proud 2 be a malay cos “malay tittle” tue sendiri actually tak menggambarkan islam..tue suma secara kebetulan..kita spatutnya rasa bersyukur cos kita dilahirkan dalam agama islam…but don 4get that “MELAYU TAK SEMESTINYA ISLAM”…tak termaktud dlm al-Quran bahawa melayu adalah islam..so,the most important now is kita sendiri kna jg iman & amal..kita kena selamatkan iman & amal kita b4 anasir2 luar mengganggu gugat agama kita..sebelum kita selamatkan keturunan kita, sebelum kita mselamatkan melayu kita, selamatkanlah dulu our religion cos islam is de most important than our lineage & our “melayu”..cos of wat?cos kat akhirat Allah tak tanya “KAU KETURUNAN APE?” & “KAU ORANG APE?”…Allah hanya melihat iman & amal..s0,i can make a conclussion that keselamatan agama itu adalah yg pertama!!SAFETY COMES FIRST..!!!

the main thing is. all of us di didik untuk berfikiran nasionalis.n fkir so much bout bangsa.kat maysia.smua start nagn jojor-sultan abubakar, turkey-kamal atartuk, n etc.nasionalis lama kelamaan akan lead to secularism.its kinda like kita di brainwash dari kecik to sanjung or be proud of being a malay.actually nothing.the real thing dalam life is our mind and soul.iman kita di sisi tuhan.n cara kita berfikir.wallahualam
