Celebrating Agong’s Birthday at Consulate General, New York
admin June 12th, 2007
Last Saturday, Malaysian Consulate General in New York hold an event to celebrate Agong’s Birthday at Consulate General. The event was started with “Negaraku” and “Keranamu Malaysia” songs led by the children’s choir of CG. Many people were present at this event including the Ministry of Finance. He gave a talk as the VIP of the day and a lot of problems were addressed especially regarding Malaysian students who do not return to our nation.
When the Q&A session begins, nobody wanted to ask anything while the minister was quite excited waiting for any questions. The first time of 2 years I’m here in USA, I was brave enough to hold up my hand and ask about “What are Malays’ dilemmas from your point of view?” - which is, of course, very out of topic. He was talking about finance and I was talking about dilemma. 2 different topics just like the earth and the sky.I realized many people were giggling and laughing - even though I ask a question out of nowhere, maybe I managed to brighten up someone’s day! After I asked that question only the others were keen to ask various questions.

Well, actually, to tell you the truth, it was a homework given to us by Dr. Azly Rahman, a professor at Columbia University and also is writer for Malaysia Today. Since we had Project AlifBaTa hold by Club UMNO NY-NJ that same weekend, we were going to have a discussion with Dr. Azly regarding Malays’ dilemmas and how to address them.

Fortunately, because of my question, Executive Director of Khazanah Nasional, En. Mohammad Zainal Shaari, was interested to talk to me regarding some issues and offered his own opinions regarding “Malays’ dilemmas”. I was even known as “dilemma girl” because of the abrupt question I asked. Lol. It was so funny. I was quite happy indeed since my walk to CG this time managed to take away the barriers I have always felt when talking to adults.
Soon, I will write about what we discussed and learned during the UMNO club’s events. So, for the meantime, what do you think Malays’s dilemmas are and what are your suggestions to solve them?

if we were to list all of them, it would be very long unended list.. I would focus on younger generation culture.. so much of our values have lost.. with the technology, our family ties have even broader.. sad to say, but there is nothing that we can do to stop it..
great event great food great people and a short minister XD just kiddin…well bout da dilemma…too many of em…too little solution…efforts? none lalalala…whatever the dilemma is, the effort begins with u
malay entrepreneur dilemma..good product, no marketing..harap gomen…die la.
first of all, congrats for being able to gather enogh courage to raise up ur hand converse with adults. personally i think the inablility of malays to have courage to do that is a dilemma itself. silence is not always golden. Socrates believed that you won’t achieve truth unless you participate in dialogues. don’t worry about the dilemma thing, just focus on overcoming it at the individual level.
yes, i agree that there are a lot of dilemmas.degrading morality mentioned by dani and no marketing mentioned by zz are just some of them. and to my friend MrQ, thank you so much for your help and support XD
