The Little Shop of Horrors

admin April 24th, 2007

Last Thursday night, Afiq, Anne and I went to watch The Little Shop Of Horrors presented by The Stevens Dramatic Society right after attending the choir practice (production of Alan Mencken and Howard Ashman’s 1982 off-Broadway classic comedy). The ticket was supposed to be $1 for Stevens students, but, since I forgot to buy 1 earlier, it cost me $3 at the door. Rest assured, it’s worth every penny of it!
Almost all of the casts are choir members. I don’t really know them that much since I’m still new to choir but I got to see them every week during practices. They are very fun to be with!
The main cast, Seymour (Gus Rath ‘09) looked a lot like Harry Potter!!

The Little Shop of Horror is mainly about a florist shop at Skid Row which is almost out of business when Seymour and his co-worker, Audrey, found a new plant. Seymour named it as Audrey II. They put it at the window and instantly, the shop became famous! However, only Seymour knows that the plant feeds on blood. The plant grows bigger each passing day.

Seymour really hates Audrey’s boyfriend, a dentist (played by Paul), since the boyfriend does not respect Audrey. He yells and smacks Audrey for all it’s worth. One day, Seymour wanted to murder the dentist but end up the dentist accidentally killed himself because of laughing gas. Seymour cut up the dentist and fed it to Audrey II. Ever since the dentist’s “mysterious disappearance”, Audrey fell in love with Seymour and they became a great couple.

However, luck was not with Seymour. His employer, the owner of the Skid Row Florist, suspected him of being the murderer. The employer insisted to see inside the plant and ended up being eaten. Day by day, Seymour became a major figure because of the newfound plant.

One day, suddenly, the plant talked “Feed Me!”. Seymour got irritated. When Audrey came in, Seymour asked her to go home so that she won’t know the true nature of the plant. Then, Seymour went out to get some food for it. However, Audrey felt worried about Seymour that she came back to the shop (of course, Seymour was not there). The plant talked to Audrey and insisted her to water him. Audrey was surprised but still fetched a can of water to water the plant. However, when Audrey was not looking, they plant tried to swallow her.

Seymour came back and heard Audrey’s cries for help and punched the plant to get Audrey out of it. However, Audrey was already dying. Before she dies, she requested Seymour to feed her to the plant so that she could grow with the plant and always be with Seymour forever. When Audrey passes away, Seymour could do nothing but grants Audrey’s final wish.

However, when the biology department came to get a sample of the plant to be distributed all over America, Seymour realized the plant’s true mission. It wants to spread its species all over the world and eat all the human beings. Seymour went mad and tried to kill the plant. However, the plant had grown into a monster and could not be killed with mere pistols and knives. The plant ended up eating Seymour. The show ends with a song that warns the US citizens “Don’t feed the plant”.

The show was awesome!! One of the best that I ever enjoyed in my life =) I’ll post pictures when I have them!

Spring Break!

admin April 24th, 2007

The fencing season is over ..(sob sob sob - i’m gonna miss fencing)… and the spring break is almost over too.

It has been a long time since I have last written in this little blog of mine. Oh well. I spent my spring break rather not-so-proactively by playing computer games from the break of the dawn until past midnight. Silkroad and dota. Now, I want to start spending it carefully. Making website and learning new stuff (and there are only 3 more days to go..huhu)

A few days ago, Afiq and I went to Burlington Coat Factory somewhere in Hoboken. The clothes were nice but I couldn’t really find the ones that suit my taste. However, Afiq bought 3 clothes for me =) Looking forward to wearing them!!

On our way to Burlington Coat Factory

Then, we went to Central Park yesterday for some ice-skating and UNFORTUNATELY, the wollman rink was closed due to rain (and it was not raining heavily too). Afiq and I wasted 10 bucks for nothing. We took a walk to the nearest shopping mall. Colleen said that it was built 2 years ago and I’ve just realized it looked almost like KLCC!!! It was like a mini-KLCC. Americans love Malaysians eh? I am soooooooo proud with Malaysia.

In front of the shopping mall. 59th Street 5th Avenue New York City.

Well, not a very nice spring break I would say. Uwaa.. Anyway, couldn’t wait to go to Orlando with Sureen, Afiq and Apiezzz.. We’re gonna have so much fun over there!!

p/s: Ok, I know I’m fat. =P

Northeast Storm & Virginia Tech Rampage

admin April 24th, 2007

Storm Pummels East Coast with rain, wind (Yahoo! News)

Yesterday, it was raining heavily since early morning until now (more than 24 hours). Anyone would have guessed that it might flood some areas. However, I didn’t know that this storms actually pummels throughout the east cost. A number of deaths were reported and more than 60 homes were evacuated. For more information, please click here.

Virginia Tech Rampage! (Yahoo! News)

At least 21 people were killed at Virginia Tech by a gunman. 2 were killed in a dorm while the rest were killed at class. Virginia Tech was in a state of chaos and all classes are canceled until Tuesday. The gunman was killed but it is not sure whether he was gunned down by the police or he killed himself. This happens to be the deadliest campus shooting in the US history. To read more about this, please click here. I’m relieved that Stevens is the urban university with the lowest crime rate in the USA.

There are 5 Malaysian students in Virginia Tech (3 Graduate students and 2 undergraduate). Alhamdulillah, all 5 of them survived since 4 of them are still in their home off-campus while the other one was in a different building nearby.

Please share your views and opinions regarding this matter in the comments section.

Tahlil for Kak Tim’s Dad

admin April 24th, 2007

Today, all of the malaysian students in Stevens hold a tahlil event for Kak Tim’s dad who had passed away. I’m so happy that everyone came and supported this event. I cooked nasi lemak as the menu for the occasion with some help from Syafiq and Latifah. I’m so glad that the sambal I cooked tasted like what I wanted at last! Yeay. However, the cucumber was a bit weird. Pahit =P

Ingredients for the Nasi Lemak:

1) Rice
2) Ginger (Cut into small pieces)
3) Coconut milk
4) Salt
5) Water
–> Mix all of them in the rice cooker and add water as you usually cook white rice.

Ingredients for the Sambal:

1) Anchovies/Fried Eggs (depends on what sambal you’re planning to cook)
2) red onion, garlic, ginger (blended)
3) dried chillies, belacan (blended)
4) air asam jawa
5) big onion (sliced into smaller pieces)
6) sugar, salt
7) Ketchup (tomato sauce - optional)
8) cooking oil

How to cook Sambal:

a) Tumiskan item number 2. When you smell a good aroma, put in item 3, 4, 5 and 7. Mix them thoroughly. Add water if needed.
b) Add sugar and salt.
c) Leave it until it is boiled. Adjust the taste by adding sugar, salt or ketchup. If it is too thick, add water.
d) Leave it until is is boil again (if you add water)
e) When it tastes good, add the anchovies or fried eggs.
f) Leave it for a few minutes.
g) Serve! =)

P/S: I assume you know how to fry the peanuts, slice the cucumber and fry the anchovies~~ hehe~

Nasi Briyani Shabomb

admin April 24th, 2007

Today, I am proud to say that I have succeed in cooking nasi briyani! Nyum nyum. It was so delicious! From my point of view, it is one of the best dishes I have ever cooked. It is so much better from the one I cooked for Paklan and his friends a few years ago. My briyani didn’t turn pink again. Lol. So, this is the recipe if any of you want to try:

Ingredients for the rice and the chicken:

1) rice & chicken (of course)
2) garlic, bawang merah (blended)
3) bawang besar cut into small pieces
4) ginger (cut into small pieces)
5) bunga cengkih, kayu manis and anything you want to put inside
6) kismis
7) gajus
8) salt, honey
9) tomato sauce/tomato puree
10) Faiza briyani powder (or any other brand of briyani powder)
11) Minyak sapi (or just ordinary cooking oil)
12) Turmeric powder (kunyit)

How to cook the rice:

a) Tumiskan item number 2,3,4,5,7 until you smell a good aroma and until the onion turns yellow.
b) After that, divide (a) into half and keep one of the half in a bowl. Leave the rest in the frying pan.
c) Wash the rice and put it into the frying pan. Mix the rice and the “tumisan” thoroughly with a small heat.
d) Put in a little turmeric powder to give the rice a color. Put in some salt. Mix them thoroughly.
e) Put the rice into rice cooker and add water as you usually cook white rice. Don’t forget to put in the kismis.

How to cook the chicken:

f) Use the half from (b) and put it into the frying pan. (Small heat)
g) Mix the briyani powder with some water and pour it into the frying pan.
h) Add the tomato sauce/puree.
g) Add some salt and some honey.
h) When it tastes good, put in the chicken.
i) Leave it until it’s fully cooked.
Yes, that’s all. Isn’t it easy? =)
